B. 1977, PHOENIX, AZ

Lindsay Mapes creates brightly colored patterned paintings which incorporate wool embroidery and fabric transparencies. Her work explores themes of erasure and obstruction, drawing upon the concept of the pentimento (from the Italian pentirsi, to repent), which, in painting, refers to lingering traces of an artist’s previous mark-making. In her work she is interested in displaying the process of visual decision making and revision. In her series In stitches Mapes applies this philosophy to the medium of embroidery to celebrate the messiness and play, joy and sadness of parenthood.
