Michael Boyd: That’s How the Light Gets In: 1970-1972 is a richly illustrated catalogue of radiant color abstractions, exhibited in 2017 at Eric Firestone Loft, New York, NY. The catalogue includes over 25 color plates of Boyd’s 1970s work, along with an essay by artist and writer Joe Fyfe. Boyd (1936-2015) began his career as an Abstract Expressionist before moving to his mature work: hard-edged minimalist abstractions. This publication is centered around work dating between 1970-1972: impeccably handmade square canvases that explore chromatic shifts through the use of color gradients. The catalogue also illustrates Boyd’s studies on paper, which provide insight into the artist’s process, with color tests and marks below the square studies. Boyd taught design at Cornell University, and divided his time between Ithaca and New York City. The book includes a checklist of the exhibition, and two installation photographs: one at Eric Firestone Loft, and another from 1972, when the same body of work was exhibited at the Fine Arts Gallery at SUNY, Oneonta.
