Serena Nickson is a New York-based painter who explores femininity inher work through figuration, still lives, and interior scenes. She articulatesmoments of suspension, often capturing figures mid-gesture or in psychologicallycharged, in-between states, ordomestic tableaus that capture fleetingmoments. Working an academic style of oil painting, her work fuses detailedrealism with expressive brushwork to explore emotional complexity beneathpolished surfaces. Nickson grew up with a deep appreciation for art, ingrainedin her by her painter father and curator mother. Her paintings often featureclear art historical references to European medieval and Renaissance art.Nickson frequently uses her friends as the subjects of her work and constructsstaged theatrical scenes of vintage furniture. She foregrounds the‘muse’-bothin subject and theme, exploring the possibilities of the gaze. She received herBFA from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
