Michelle Flores makes illustrative textiles in conversation with historic weaving traditions, exploring associations of craft with nature and femininity. She studied traditional tapestry weaving at Texere in Oaxaca, Mexico and draws from Mexican folk art as well as ancient hieroglyphics and popular culture. Her imagery, associated with ornament and the decorative, illustrates tension between the masculine and feminine, reality and fantasy, the everyday and the ceremonial.
Flores holds a BFA in Fiber from California State University, Long Beach, and has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Her work has been exhibited at Pitzer College Art Galleries and Neo Los Angeles.
