Guy Richards Smit is an American performance artist, painter, and singer-songwriter. Using pop cultural forms such as Stand Up comedy, Pop Music, Comic Books, New York Times’ front pages and television Sitcoms, he conveys a sharply observant cultural and political message with philosophical observations and humor. He studied abroad for a year at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam as an undergraduate at Parsons, before completing his MFA at Rutgers University. He has received awards including the Penny McCall Foundation Award in 2004 and the Foundation for Contemporary Art in 2016. He has exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, The Hirshhorn Museum and The Pompidou Center, among others, while his gag cartoons have appeared in Hyperallergic, Artnet, and the New Yorker.
