Jen Stark: Artist-in-residence @ The Surf Lodge | Montauk
Opening Reception: May 24th, 5 – 7 PM
East Hampton, NY: Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to announce its inaugural collaboration with the artist residency program at Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY. Los Angeles-based artist, Jen Stark has been invited to kick off the Summer season by installing a 90-square-foot hanging sculpture in the gallery of Montauk’s emblematic hotel set on Fort Pond.
Stark is best known for her meticulously assembled, colorful paper constructions and large-scale painted murals. Her works are comprised of precisely choreographed layers of paper adhered to each other, or lingering a few inches away from accompanying pieces. Stark integrates wood, metal, paint, plexi and animation into the works, playing with form and texture. Works blossom from assembled materials, pleasantly unfurling into the gallery space, knocking down the barrier between art and viewer. Other sculptures are created by removing material as Stark carves spaces into solid white blocks inviting the viewer to look closer.
Juxtaposing playful color combinations with delicate and unified compositions, Stark explores the theatrical interplay between her work’s surface and its depth. Oscillating between a multi-colored or rainbow gradient, Stark chooses to depict contour by rendering a line through contrasting hues. Repetitive shapes make each layer a pristine reflection of the prior. Everything is made by hand with engineered precision.
Stark’s work explores intricate patterns and colors found in nature while playing with ideas of replication and infinity, symmetry and singularity, gravity and suspension. These relationships correspond to elemental occurrences, drawing inspiration from empirical observations of nature and how we compartmentalize these patterns: naturally occurring fractals, evolution, topography, dinosaur bones hanging from a museum ceiling, and grand theories of the universe. Stark’s practice is very meditative and intuitive. As a result, her work speaks to us in a fundamental visual language.
Jen Stark was born in Miami, Florida in 1983 and received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005, majoring in fibers with a minor in animation. Stark has exhibited globally with major shows in NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Thailand and Canada. Her work is included in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the West Collection, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and MOCA Miami among others. Stark recently completed major commissions for Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo, California and the Miami International Airport, respectively.
