ERIC FIRESTONE GALLERY PRESENTS

PARTS & SERVICE

AUGUST 11 – SEPTEMBER 2, 2012

EAST HAMPTON, NY: Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to announce PARTS & SERVICE, an exhibition that celebrates the grit and glory of the garage as a shrine to racing, bike culture, and all things automotive, opening with a reception on Saturday, August 11th from 6 – 9:00pm.

Using the fetishism of the garage, along with the ritual behavior surrounding the care and maintenance of racing cars and motorcycles as context for the show, PARTS & SERVICE explores such themes as objectivity, sexuality, and the myth of the renegade biker through a display of eclectic artifacts, photographs, and mixed media works.  From car wrecks and burning rubber to sleek aero-dynamic designs and present-day pin-up girls, this diverse imagery reflects the inherent duality of this counter-cultural phenomenon—epitomized by both the romanticized depiction of the outlaw biker, portrayed by Marlon Brando in The Wild One (1953), as well as the contemporary dark representation of same, exhibited by Jax Teller in the popular television series Sons of Anarchy.

Curator Eric Firestone has created a provocative visual narrative of garage culture through a broad range of material including works by invited artists such as Glen Baldridge, Bast, Slater Bradley, Jonathan Brand, John Chamberlain, Liz Cohen, Pia Dehne, Nick Dine, Jonah Freeman, Rogan Gregory, Anthony James, Gregory Johnston, Richard Kern, Justen Ladda, Robert Lazzarini, Justin Lowe, Craig McDean, Enrique Montenegro, Olivier Mosset, Guy Overfelt, Shelter Serra, Dirk Skreber, Max Snow, Despina Stokou, Eric White, Firooz Zahedi. Beyond the conventional tropes of chrome and leather, the dominant visual metaphor communicated through much of this work is that of personal freedom—a transcendental experience of speed on the open road, the endorphin rush of the finish line, and the spirituality of the ride.
